Community Justice Project

Building Opportunity in SACNAS

SACNAS is the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science. Most Universities around the world have a SACNAS chapter and host their own events and meetings. Earlier this year (2024), I had the opportunity to work as flyer distributer for the University of Brown SACNAS chapter. This was all possible due to my Intro to Chicano Studies Course's Community Justice Project. This project had one goal in mind, and it was to assist diverse communities with your finest skill. In this case, I chose to reach out to Brown and ask if their SACNAS division needed help. Immediately I was able to understand these scholars have no time to put 2 1/2 hours into organizing a flyer and posting it while managing a social media account. I was able to use photoshop and Canva to create some flyers that essentially were a hit! Every event was a turn out and we had more recruitments last SPRING 2024 than ever before. When it was all over, I had to write a four-page paper explaining my experience and how I revamped SACNAS across the states. It was an honor working for Brown University and look forward to more collaborations with Ivy League academics. Now, I am a part of the SACNAS chapter at the University of Arizona and cannot wait to present a poster at the 2025 SACNAS conference!
